Rebel Rant Medal: Rnd 16

  • Rebel Rant Medal: Rnd 16

A second disappointing loss in a row for the Melbourne Rebels has meant the break for the June Tests hasn't come fast enough. Going down to the Brumbies 37-10 will hopefully motivate Tony McGahan to work hard with the team over the next month, but for now we look at the Rebels three best performers from this rounds match.

1 vote: Luke Jones

The one vote could've gone to anyone. Jason Woodward was not bad at full-back, Tamati Ellison and Mitch Inman made some nice tackles in defence, but in the end Luke Jones takes the one vote. It was a nice way to lead into the first Wallabies camp of his career; he finished with the most runs (9), lineout takes (2) and tackles (13) for the Rebels, as well as the entire game for the latter stat. Always hard at it in the trenches, he is touted as being one of the starting locks in the upcoming tests for Australia - here's hoping he can make that a reality.

2 votes: Scott Fuglistaller

It wasn't the best defensive performance from the team, but Scott Fuglistaller was once again one of the leaders in the side. With Colby Fainga'a playing well below his best, Fuglistaller was the most dominant flanker for the Rebels. Along with Jones, a match-high 13 tackles combined with an impressive pilfer in the first half shows why he has been one of the best loose forwards in the Rebels team this year.

3 votes: Bryce Hegarty

Once again, it is unsurprising to see this name taking three votes. This means we also see a new leader at the top of the Rebel Rant Medal tally. Always looking to create, attempting some clever kicks, steps and passes, and fast becoming one of the more impressive and quickest-improving youngsters in the Australian conference, Bryce Hegarty finished the match off with 8 tackles, 3 tackle busts, a linebreak, and a match-high 97 running metres. With Queensland Reds utility back Mike Harris on his way to the Rebels next season, I'm hoping the new recruit plays at inside centre because I'd be very disappointed to see him displace Hegarty from his fly-half position; the 21 year-old has been developing wonderfully.
