Rebel Rant Medal: Round 9

  • Rebel Rant Medal: Round 9

Another close defeat for the Rebels this season has left some fans frustrated -- not to mention the players and coaches. The six point loss to the Chiefs wasn't entirely negative though, there were several stand out players for the Rebels. Who were they?

1 vote: Bryce Hegarty
Once again, the young flyhalf showed us why he encapsulates what the Rebels attitude should be. His energy and willingness to take on the opposition was on show, and he proves to be intelligent beyond his years as well. A loose ball situation where the Rebels turned the ball over and a kick was played into an open attacking half for the Chiefs saw Hegarty exhibit his lightning speed, giving up almost ten metres to beat two Chiefs players, dive on the ball and then kick it into touch while lying on is side, saving a certain try against the Rebels.

2 votes: Colby Fainga'a
Coming back after a week off from injury, Fainga'a has made the no.6 position his own in the last few games, replacing Sean McMahon even after the impressive start to the season he had. Fainga'a's zeal at the breakdown has been a key factor in Melbourne's increasing effectiveness in ruck situations, and he is one of many paths that Melbourne can use in the trenches to help move the ball forward. He also shows that he is handy in the scrum, filling in at no.8 when Scott Higginbotham was yellow carded in the second half. 10 carries for 43 metres were great statistics for the former Brumbies man at the end of the game.

3 votes: Luke Jones
Increasingly impressive with every game, Luke Jones is receiving the plaudits he deserves for his outstanding season thus far. Possibly a bit stiff to have only one vote to his name before this round, but he has definitely earned this three-voter with the performance he put in. Now becoming one of Melbourne's primary routes forward when facing a sturdy opposition defence, Jones' ability to crash into the opponents line and gain several extra metres has been one of the showcase aspects to his game. He has had an increasing presence in the lineout as well, having a game-high six lineout takes on Saturday. Add to this his 12 carries for 47 metres, and you have yourself a Rebels Man of the Match.

Honourable Mention:
Tom English once again proving he is one of the best young players in the team. A game-high 72 metres made, plenty of tackle busting runs down the wing and getting himself involved in try-creating chances earns him an honorable mention this week. Unlucky to not knock off Hegarty or Fainga'a for one or two votes.
