Rebel Rant Medal: Round 8

  • Rebel Rant Medal: Round 8

Another weekend, another Rebel Rant Medal Count. This weekend we saw another decent game from Melbourne, but were unlucky to not end up taking the victory following some nice tries and an attacking push in the second half. There were many shining lights in the teams performance, but we're going to pick the best three.

1 vote: Tamati Ellison
Unlucky for several other players not to get this vote, but Tamati Ellison showed his wile and experience in the second half, acting as an important link in several of Melbourne's chain plays, setting up tries and getting involved defensively. He featured in Jason Woodwards try, showing a clean pair of hands as he quickly flicked the ball around the corner to set up the fullback in the dying stages. For his consistency, he receives the one vote.

2 votes: Nic Stirzaker
Another impressive performance from the young man. He's continued to prove to Tony McGahan that he's a worthy selection at scrumhalf ahead of the veteran Luke Burgess. Again we saw his energy and hunger around the breakdown, willing for every ball and every pass, but we also had a better look at his speed this week. Stirzaker is easily one of the fastest players at the Rebels, and he exhibited his pace by running at the defence and attempting several linebreaks throughout the first half. Set up a few tries, and deserved of the two votes.

3 votes: Scott Higginbotham
What can't this man do? He was everywhere around the ground against the Highlanders. He was one of the most used options at the lineout (5 lineout wins, the most on the ground among both sides), a key factor once again in the scrum, a rock in the rucks, and he showed us his attacking flair as well. He had two interceptions for the game, accumulated 99 running metres and beautifully set up Angus Roberts' try by putting the ball on the boot for a well placed grubber kick in the scrumhalf's path. The epitome of consistency.

Honourable Mentions:
Scott Fuglistaller once again was one of the best in defence, tackling hard and getting under the skin of the opponents. Jason Woodward was the highest scorer for the night with 20 points and was unlucky to get edged out for the one vote. Mitch Inman was impressive, while Angus Roberts and Male Sau were okay in patches.
